Barnicoat’s agony in re-arranged sprint

Saturday, 02 September 2017

Pirelli World Challenge, SprintX, Round 2 – Race 2 (Make Up):

Extensive damage to the front of his K-PAX Racing McLaren 650 S GT3 machine prevented Ben Barnicoat from making his way through the grid as the rescheduled race two from May’s second Pirelli World Challenge SprintX round took place in the Texan sunset at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

Following severe rainstorms at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, officials opted to suspend the start of the race, and re-arrange it for a subsequent weekend.

The late evening sun provided such an opportunity, and Barnicoat lined up in 14th position on the grid after qualifying the car over three months’ prior.

Barnicoat made a solid start to the race, retaining position over the opening couple of laps before a Full Course Yellow was required to clear debris on the pit straight.

Following the restart, Barnicoat’s fortunes took a dent when he locked his tyres up at Turn 1, and collided with the #88 Bentley Continental GT3 which caused damage to his radiator and right front corner of the car.

Barnicoat pitted in order for the K-PAX Racing squad to make vital repairs. Once the car was ready to re-join the race, the pit window was open, enabling Barnicoat’s team-mate Alvaro Parente to climb into the car and ensure that the car completed 17 laps of the 3.4-mile circuit to be classified in 21st position.

As the #9 McLaren completed over 50 per cent of the race winner’s total of 27 laps, it ensured that the car would be credited with championship points.

Barnicoat and Parente will return to on-track action on Saturday evening to qualify for the fifth and final SprintX round of the season.

The Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R machine of Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister scored race victory, three seconds ahead of the TR3 Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 of Daniel Mancinelli and Niccolo Schiro.

The CRP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 shared by Ryan Dalziel and Daniel Morad claimed third place on the podium.
