Barnicoat surges to P4 in Utah finale

Pirelli World Challenge, SprintX, Round 4: Utah Motorsports Campus – Race 2

Ben Barnicoat and team-mate Alvaro Parente performed an outstanding surge forward to grab a fourth place finish in the second and final Pirelli World Challenge SprintX race of the weekend at Utah Motorsports Campus.

Having ended Saturday’s opening race in the driver’s seat, Racing Steps Foundation-backed Barnicoat began the finale from 11th position on the grid in the #9 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650 S GT3.

Barnicoat took to the inside of Turn 1 from the rolling start, but over the course of the lap lost out two places falling behind the #78 Bentley Continental GT3 machine of fellow Briton Will Stevens.

Throughout the following laps, Barnicoat remained just three tenths of a second behind Stevens’ Bentley, before making his move forwards towards the end of his stint with 37 minutes remaining.

Barnicoat out-dragged Stevens down the pit straight enabling him to move up the inside of the Bentley into Turn 1. He then surged forwards around the rest of the lap, targeting the #75 Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 of Ricardo Sanchez, and grabbing 10th place up the inside at the final corner before defending the position from a determined Sanchez at Turn 1.

With the pit window opening, Barnicoat immediately dived into the pits at the end of the lap with 35 minutes remaining, handing his McLaren over to Parente.

Following the pit stops and a safety car period to clear Stevens’ stricken Bentley from the side of the track, Parente was promoted to sixth place and grabbed fifth past the Cadillac of Michael Cooper moments before a second safety car period.

Parente’s progression wasn’t complete, as on the restart with three and a half minutes remaining and the field bunched up, fourth placed Patrick Long drifted his Porsche 911 GT3 R machine wide over the kerbs, handing Parente the opportunity to move up the inside.

Parente was unable to make further moves forward as the race clock ticked over to its one-hour completion and took the chequered flag in fourth place.

The #31 Ferrari 488 GT3 machine of Daniel Mancinelli and Niccolo Schiro scored race victory. The #43 Acura NSX GT3 of Ryan Eversley and Tom Dyer scored second place, with Jordan Taylor/Michael Cooper (#8 Cadillac ATS-V.R) finished third.
