Pirelli World Challenge, SprintX, Round 3: Lime Rock Park – Race 2:
Ben Barnicoat collected his second consecutive Pirelli World Challenge SprintX podium of the weekend at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut with a third place finish.
The Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver and K-PAX Racing team-mate Alvaro Parente began the final 60-minute encounter from fifth position following the previous day’s third place finish in race one.
With Parente in the team’s McLaren 650 S GT3 machine for the opening stint of the race, the Portuguese McLaren factory driver was immediately in the action.
As the race began under a rolling start, the field was led with four cars side-by-side including Parente and the #58 Porsche 911 of Marc Lieb travelling down the inside.
However Lieb was hit into a spin from the rear into a spin directly in front of Parente. Lieb spun on to the inside grass verge and travelled backwards at high speed back on to the track at Turn 1, colliding with the #2 Mercedes-AMG GT3 machine of Ryan Dalziel.
With Parente escaping unscathed, he managed to move up a single place into fourth with a safety car called to clear Lieb’s stranded Porsche.
Following the race resumption, Parente remained in fourth place, attempting to hunt down the #43 Acura NSX over 1.5 seconds ahead.
With 28 minutes remaining, and mid-way through the pit window, Parente and the two other K-PAX Racing McLaren cars all headed into the pits to switch places, with Parente making way for Barnicoat.
Following the conclusion of all stops, Barnicoat had jumped ahead of the #43 Acura NSX in the pits, but was 10 seconds behind the #8 Cadillac ATS-V.R of Jordan Taylor. In Barnicoat’s closer attentions was the #88 Bentley Continental of Vincent Abril around a second behind.
But in the closing stages, Barnicoat managed to negotiate traffic well, with Abril held up on two occasions to increase the gap to the Bentley to over two seconds and relieve any pressure up to the chequered flag and cement a successful weekend for the #9 McLaren.
The #4 Magnus Racing Audi RS8 LMS of Dane Cameron and Spencer Pumpelly scored a convincing victory, managing to extend their lead over the #8 Cadillac ATS-V.R of Jordan Taylor and Michael Cooper following the pit stops.
