Canadian qualifying woes for Barnicoat

Pirelli World Challenge, SprintX, Round 2: Canadian Tire Motorsport Park - Qualifying

Ben Barnicoat and K-PAX Racing team-mate Alvaro Parente will face a challenge to come through the SprintX field for the second successive Pirelli World Challenge round after a tough qualifying session at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park near Toronto in Canada.

With the team’s #9 McLaren 650 S GT3 machine difficulties once again, Parente struggled to mount a competitive challenge to the leading runners.

In bright but cool conditions. Parente set a time of 1m 16.567s which was only good enough to take ninth position, over 1.5 seconds off the provisional pole position time.

Proceedings were heavily delayed when a red flag curtailed the session with six minutes remaining as the #61 Ferrari 488 GT3 machine of Alex Riberas hit the wall on the exit of Turn 3.

Following a lengthy cleanup operation, and with organisers facing timetable pressures, the session was concluded. Parente will therefore start the opening one-hour race from eighth position.

“It’s difficult to understand and identify our lack of pace at the moment,” Barnicoat admitted. “Like round one, the plan is going to be to attempt to battle through the pack in the opening race, and hope to get a good starting grid slot for race two and grab points and a podium.

“The weather forecast is for rain on Sunday too, for race two, so that could also be a good opportunity to take advantage.”

The #58 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R of Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister scored pole position courtesy of the #61 Ferrari losing its fastest lap time for causing the red flag stoppage.

The #2 CRP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Daniel Morad and Ryan Dalziel will start alongside the Ferrari on the front row of the grid.
